Problem Assignment and Revision

Guideline: Allow for incremental improvement - Encourage students to begin working on projects early in the semester and to turn in small parts of the project (such as a bibliography of resources, an outline, or a rough draft) throughout the semester. Give feedback.

Assignment: Students are asked to complete a lengthy research paper on a topic of their choice.

Problem: Students seem overwhelmed by the project and the end product is a less-than-organized and less-than-thorough examination of the topic. There is no clear thesis statement and/or argument to support the thesis. Selection of cited materials shows limited range of sources used. There is also no clear indication that the research process has been discussed in class or that components of the project have been identified.

Revised Assignment:
  • Assignment Objective 1: Recognize that research is a process.

  • Assignment Objective 2: Identify and describe components of a research project that can be completed in a sequential and progressive fashion.

  • Assignment Description: As part of the research project, complete and submit project components or Building Blocks. Each component will be graded and will receive feedback. Feedback is expected to be incorporated into the final research project as are the individual components with the exception of the project outline and rough draft.
