Web of Science is now the Web of Knowledge

This new name better reflects the multidisciplinary holdings in the Web of Knowledge. The Web of Knowledge includes the Arts & Humanities Citation Index, Science Citation Index, and Social Sciences Citation Index. UMBC access includes all entries from 1998 to present.

New database added - Early English Book Online (EEBO)

Library now subscribes to Early English Book Online (EEBO). It is a searchable full text database of over 95,000 titles published between 1475 and 1700. Over 125,000 titles anticipated (new titles are added each year). Searchable by author, title, subject & imprint information. Documents can be viewed online and or downloaded in PDF format (Adobe). The coverage is from ca. 1475 to 1700 (historical).

University Archives on Flickr

The Special Collections department is currently testing out a new way to gather information on unidentified photographs and expose our alums and the greater university community to our historical holdings. Using the Albin O. Kuhn Library & Gallery's newly established Flickr page, we have added University Archives photographs that feature UMBC students in the 1960s, 70s, and 80s. Anyone is encouraged to leave a note or comment with information or reflections on the people, places, and events shown in the photographs.
This tool is still being tested but other institutions have had success with similar interactive projects, including:

The Polar Bear Expedition Digital Collections at the University of Michigan (features EAD finding aids, commenting capabilities, user profiles and saved bookmarks)

New database added - Oxford Languages Dictionaries Online

The library now subscribes to Oxford Languages Dictionaries Online.
http://www.oxfordlanguagedictionaries.com/
Now you can search Oxford's bilingual dictionaries in French, German, Italian, Spanish, Russian and Chinese. It can be searched or browsed, phonetic symbols are explained, and references can be emailed or exported to bibliographical software. Other features include audible pronunciation, grammatical notes, guides to cultural events of each country, and hints for writing in a variety of situations and formats.

The library just set up trial access to Proquest Historical Newspapers - Black Newspapers.

, click on "database selected" right below the main tabs, and then scroll down to the bottom on the new page and you will see the 5 black historical newspapers listed.

5 newspapers included:
Atlanta Daily World (1931-2003) The Atlanta Daily World had the first black White House correspondent and was the first black daily in the nation in the 20th century.
The Chicago Defender (1909-1975) A leading African-American newspaper, with more than two-thirds of its readership outside Chicago.
Los Angeles Sentinel (1934-2005) The oldest and largest black newspaper in the western United States and the largest African-American owned newspaper in the U.S.
New York Amsterdam News (1922-1993) This leading Black newspaper of the 20th century reached its peak in the 1940s. The Amsterdam News was a strong advocate for the desegregation of the U.S. military during World War II, and also covered the historically important Harlem Renaissance.
Pittsburgh Courier (1911-2002) One of the most nationally circulated Black newspapers, the Courier reached its peak in the 1930s. A conservative voice in the African-American community, the Courier challenged the misrepresentation of African-Americans in the national media and advocated social reforms to advance the cause of civil rights.

Computers and Applied Science Complete added

Hi,
Starting July 1, 2008, UMBC library switches from Applied Science and Technology Abstract (EBSCO) to Computers and Applied Science Complete (EBSCO). They are identical databases, but CASC has over 500 journals that are full-text.

Credo Reference database cancelled July 1, 2008

Hi,
The library no longer subscribes to Credo Reference (used to be "Xrefer Plus"). Oxford Reference Online ( http://www.oxfordreference.com/) is now the replacement.

Starting July 1, 2008, UMBC library users can now have access to Oxford Reference Online (ORO)
It includes full text of over 100 dictionaries, general reference, language reference, and subject reference works. You can access it either from the Database Search option on the library home page or via the Research Port. Also about 20 Oxford Online Encyclopedias library previously purchased are cross-searchable in ORO.

EndNote Web Workshop for Faculty and Staff

This workshop will focus on setting up an EndNote Web account, importing database citations, web-based citations or searching and importing resources through EndNote Web, using the Cite While You Write for Microsoft Word plug-in and setting up and/or sharing project folders.
