LibX Toolbar: UMBC Edition
LibX Toolbar: UMBC Edition is a browser extension (also known as a plug-in or add-on) that provides direct access to the Library's resources from any page on the web. LibX was originally developed for Firefox, but a beta version is now available for Internet Explorer. For help installing LibX see below or contact the Reference Department at http://aok.lib.umbc.edu/askus/refqform.php.
Installation
Firefox:
Click here to install LibX UMBC Edition Version 1.5.11 for Firefox
If Firefox displays a message "To protect your computer, Firefox prevented this site... from installing software on your computer", press the button labelled "Edit Options..." and click "Allow" to add "aok.lib.umbc.edu" to the list of websites from which extensions may be installed. Then click "Ok" or "Close" and click on the "Install LibX " link again. You will need to relaunch Firefox to see the LibX extension.
Internet Explorer:
NOTE: The Internet Explorer version of LibX is relatively new and still considered to be beta software. If you choose to install it, please note that some of the features may not work correctly, and it may cause other problems with your browser.

Save the file. Close all Internet Explorer windows and run the file. A wizard will walk you through the installation process. Check the box to re-start Internet Explorer before you click "finish". LibX IE requires that .Net 2.0 or later is installed. You may need to check your Windows Update.
This extension works with Firefox and Internet Explorer only. It does not work with other browsers such as Safari. It has been tested with Firefox versions 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, and 3.0 and Internet Explorer versions 6 and 7 on Windows, Linux, and Macintosh OS-X.
Features
Toolbar:
Search the library catalog (catalogusmai), Journals Quick Search, Database Quick Search, and Google Scholar from any page on the web. Use the 
and 
icons to add or remove as many search fields as you need.
The toolbar also provides links to the Library's homepage, the Library Catalog (catalogUSMAI), UMBC Subject Guides, UMBC Research Help Guides, and Ask a UMBC Librarian.
Right-click Context Menu:
Highlight text on a page and use the right-click context menu to search the library catalog (catalogusmai) or Google Scholar. You may also reload a page through the Library's off-campus proxy, or follow a link via the proxy, making it appear as though you are coming from an on-campus computer. This features gives you access to resources to which only on-campus users have access.
Quick full text access to journal articles:
LibX uses Google Scholar to search for articles and directs the user to the electronic copy subscribed to by UMBC. Select a citation, then drag-and-drop it onto the Scholar button 
on the toolbar. You can use this feature even from inside a PDF file, which makes retrieving papers referenced in a PDF file a snap.
NOTE: To use this feature from off-campus, you must set University of Maryland, Baltimore County as your Library Link in Google Scholar Preferences
Support for embedded cues:
LibX places a small UMBC logo 
in web pages you visit if the library has resources related to that page. Whenever you see the cue, click on the link to look at what the library has to offer. For instance, book pages at Amazon or Barnes & Noble may contain cues that can check whether the library has the book you are looking to buy. Other pages that contain cues are Google, Yahoo! Search, the NY Times Book Review, and others.
Support for xISBN:
A book title can have different ISBNs for the paperback, the hardcover, even for different editions. LibX supports OCLC's xISBN service: you can find a book, given an ISBN, even if the library holds this book under a different ISBN.

LibX is distributed under the Mozilla Public License. The copyright is held jointly by Annette Bailey and Virginia Tech.
By using this extension you may send the URL of pages you are currently visiting to your library's catalog server. Such information is sent only if you are actively using the extension; it is never sent automatically. If you wish to avoid this you must turn off the referrer URL by setting network.http.sendRefererHeader to 0 in your preferences.
