Blackboard as an alternative to E-Reserves

As an alternative to using e-reserves in the library, UMBC instructors may want to consider using Blackboard to post their course readings. Blackboard offers an integrated learning experience for the student where you can also post other course materials and hold online discussion sections, among other great extras. By putting your readings and course materials on Blackboard you are creating a secure environment for your course materials since only students who are enrolled in the course will have access. Students login as they would to MyUMBC, so no additional password is necessary.

If you choose to use Blackboard for reserves, announcements, class discussion and/or student assignments and submissions, here are some helpful facts for getting started.

Blackboard allows you to:
  • Upload documents in any word processing or scanning format (Word, WordPerfect, Richtext or Adobe .pdf)
  • Upload image files, PowerPoint presentations, or Multimedia files
  • Annotate, edit or update files online
  • Establish online discussion groups and email lists
  • Post announcements and assignments
  • Receive student assignments online
  • Track assignments submitted and grades
  • Archive course material for future use
