These manuscripts contain the papers of individuals and organizations connected with the Baltimore Maryland region.
  • Baltimore Sun archives

    Coverage: 1837-2007. Special Collections maintains a growing Baltimore Sun archives which includes approximately 750,000 photographs, negatives, transperencies, and archival collections documenting the Sun's history dating to 1837.

  • Baltimore Sun financial and selected labor records

    Coverage: 1837-1986. Contains information pertaining to Sun finances and Baltimore Newspaper Guild relations. Financial materials include monthly statements, treasurer's reports, tax and payroll records, financial correspondence, and transactional files in both loose and ledger formats. Among the Guild materials are correspondence, meeting minutes, Guild negotiation documents, and newsletters from the late 1930s and early 1940s, many of which were the personal copies of H.L. Mencken.

  • Ernest Kempe collection

    Coverage: 1865-1953. This collection, compiled and collected by Ernest Kempe, includes a series of scrapbook pages from twenty binders and a ledger with clippings dealing with Baltimore, Maryland.

  • Perry Hall Improvement Association (PHIA) records

    Coverage: 1945-1986. Includes the documents on the founding and organization of the Association, projects undertaken, membership lists, newspaper clippings and zoning regulations from the period.

  • Philip M. Wagner papers

    Coverage: 1839-1995, bulk 1942-1989. This collection contains the documents relating to the life and work of Philip M. Wagner (1904-1996). Wagner served as a columnist and editor at the Baltimore Sun from 1930-1964. The materials are organized into series which reflect the major areas of life & work: personal, Sun Papers & Boordy Vineyards.

  • Stabler family papers

    Coverage: 1893-1973. This collection of records of the Stabler family documents their activities primarily from 1941 to 1973. Personal histories including correspondence, photographs, newspapers, official documents, and certificates provide a brief biographical sketch of the members of the Hayes/Stabler family. The collection also contains ephemera and books.

    Coverage: current. A collection of links relating to regional Maryland history with an emphasis on Baltimore. Includes contact and collection information for libraries, museums, historical societies as well as locations of historical newspapers, oral histories, digital images and illustrations, and online documentary projects.



Literary Manuscripts

  • Literary Manuscripts: Science Fiction & Fantasy

    Coverage: c. 1950s-1990s. The literary manuscripts collections at UMBC include manuscripts, gallery and page proofs and other pre-publication materials, primarily by science fiction and fantasy authors.



Personal Papers

Collections of the personal papers of writers, photographers and other individuals held at UMBC.
  • Albin O. Kuhn papers

    Coverage: 1950-1980. The collection documents Kuhn's employment in the University System of Maryland including his involvement with the College Park, Baltimore County, and Baltimore campuses. Kuhn served as a professor, administrator, chancellor, and advisor during his tenure and this collection reflects the breadth of his involvement. The development of UMBC was overseen by Kuhn and he served as the campus's first chancellor and both of these roles are extensively covered.

  • Brian C. Daley papers

    Coverage: 1978-1996. This collection contains an assortment of materials written and collected by Brian Daley. Daley was an American bestselling science fiction author. Included within the collection are notes, photographs, professional and personal correspondence, drafts, newspaper clippings, personal movies, and personal documents. The majority of the collection spans the 1980s and 1990s and also includes some of the author's earlier papers, such as personal correspondence from the Vietnam War.

  • David F. Bischoff papers

    Coverage: 1970-1991. This collection centers on Bischoff's work as a science fiction, fantasy, and horror writer. Over 800 manuscripts are included, along with correspondence and other personal papers.

  • Dick Higgins collection

    Coverage: 1958-2002. Showcases Dick Higgins’s influence on the Fluxus movement through his artwork and publishing house, Something Else Press. Higgins’s embraced this idea and went on to create performance pieces such as Happenings and Danger Music; visual, concrete, and pattern poetry; mail art; prints and paintings; as well as his publication work through Something Else Press, all of which are represented in this collection.

  • Ferdinand C. Latrobe papers

    Coverage: 1833-1922. This collection contains a multitude of materials written by Ferdinand C. Latrobe and relating to Mr. Latrobe. Latrobe was Mayor of Baltimore for seven terms, spanning the last quarter of the nineteenth century.

  • Jule Eisenbud collection on Ted Serios and thoughtographic photography

    Coverage: 1931-1999. The Eisenbud collection, originating mainly from the 1960s during the years of Eisenbud's experimentation on renowned psychic photographer Ted Serios, provide an introduction to the psychic phenomenon 'thoughtography'. This collection contains thousands of photographs documenting Eisenbud's research and evidence of thoughtography.

  • Mildred Grossman papers

    Coverage: 1929-1995. The papers of Mildred Grossman cover her active and dedicated life. Included within the collection are photographs, both professional and personal, correspondence between friends and clients, diaries, daybooks, financial, medical, and legal documents. The photographs in this collection include a selection related to the Hotel Trades Council’s exhibit “Portrait of a Union” and hundreds of personal photographs. Grossman's professional photographs have been removed and are housed with UMBC's Photography Collections.

  • Roger Zelazny papers

    Coverage: 1970-1976. These papes cover Roger Zelazny's professional career from 1970-1976. Materials include manuscripts of his books, stories, and articles; correspondence with literary agent Henry Morrison, publishing companies, and other science fiction authors; and selections of related Zelazny publications.
